The Euro 2012 soccer championships to be hosted by Poland and the preparations of Silesia province for the event are the greatest challenge for the regional authorities. But to achieve success, it is not enough just to prepare sports facilities for the championship. A more pressing task is to modernize the province's transport infrastructure. Key transport projects have been under way in the province for many years now.

The emergence of budget airlines has resulted in a rapid increase in air traffic and the modernization of the regional airport in Pyrzowice. Passenger Terminal B opened in 2007, and the stretch of the S-1 expressway linking Pyrzowice with the Podwarpie Interchange opened in late 2006, providing convenient access to the airport. Pyrzowice Airport is now able to handle up to 3.6 million passengers a year.
More projects are to be carried out at the airport in the future, including the construction of new aprons, a third passenger terminal and a new runway. But there are also plans to expand transport infrastructure in the area, including public transport facilities for passengers traveling to the airport. The Katowice and Siemianowice Slaskie municipalities are planning the construction of a direct expressway linking the cities with the airport.

At a March conference held to discuss the introduction of Schengen procedures at Pyrzowice Airport, the local authorities presented plans to connect the airport with the province's main cities. Under these plans, a stretch of the A1 freeway from Chalupki to Pyrzowice is to be constructed by 2010. The construction of the second carriageway on the existing road linking Pyrzowice with the Podwarpie Interchange, near Siewierz, on national roads no. 1 and no. 86, will also be completed in two years.
After its completion, the A1 freeway will be conveniently connected-through the expressway from Pyrzowice to Podwarpie and through the eastern beltway of the Upper Silesian Industrial District-with national road no. 1 and the S-1 road running to Cieszyn and with the S-69 road, now under construction, which will link Bielsko-Biala with Zywiec and Zwardon. As a result, by 2013 the airport will be connected with the Slovak and Czech road systems through expressways.
